HENRI ETEVE, a true-blue Parisian who has been living in the Philippines since 1966, is a visual artist who has successfully made the West and the East, the First and the Third World, meet through the language of art. His zest for life, particularly life lived and upheld to the fullest even to the point of crossing over cultures, found its seminal source in his chosen professional name: DI MELIORA. Di Meliora’s works come in a minimum of five different artforms, namely: painting, sculpture, mixed media, tapestry, and digital images. The sculptures are in Philippine hardwood, marble, jade, copper, brass, iron, aircraft aluminum, acrylic, resin, and even the vertebrae of a whale and a human. The mixed media are in wood and copper plate, MDF, wax, plastic, metals, epoxy, and whatever else the artist can get his hands on. The tapestries are made of wool and knotted by skilled artisans, and the digital images come to life as mixed media originating from the artist's computer. Curvilinear lines define the shapes and figures in all the artforms, hardly is there a straight line longer that two inches. Negative and positive voids, both visual and tactile, interact synergistically, so that the positive-negative relationship becomes a statement of universal fact: silence allows sound to emerge; darkness makes light brilliant; death underscores the beauty and importance of life; abyss heightens the glory of a peak, ad infinitum.
